How is it determined?

An instrument is use to measure pockets around the teeth. The higher the number, the deeper it goes and the worse it is.

Gingivitis

This condition exists when the gums are swollen, red and bleeding because of too much plaque, calculus and bacteria. The bone however is healthy.

Periodontitis

This condition exists when the gums are swollen and red & when the bone is also inflamed.

Plaque and calculus

Plaque is soft and easily removed by brushing. Calculus or tartar is hard and needs to be professionally removed.

Regular Cleaning vs Deep Cleaning.

A regular cleaning (or prophylaxis cleaning) does not need numbing. A deep cleaning (or Scaling and Root Planing) needs numbing and is done under the gums.
